Durango Business Improvement District
City of Durango
Bank of Colorado Buildiing
1199 Main Ave.
970.259.1000
|
In 1997, the City Council authorized an election for a special improvement District. In November 1997, in an overwhelming vote of support, the voters in the District choose to support the special district and a corresponding 1.5 mil levy. Originally, the District was called the 'Durango Conference Center Business Improvement District'. Early projects included a feasibility study for a downtown conference center, research regarding other Rocky Mountain communities, special event support and support of District activities. In November 2003, the voters approved a renewal of the nominal 1.5 mil levy. As the District’s role in the City has expanded the name was changed to the Durango Business Improvement District. In fall 2003, the City of Durango hired a new downtown Durango coordinator to focus City efforts on downtown projects and special promotions. In 2003, the Downtown Durango Partnership formed to give downtown Durango stakeholders (both public and private) a forum for coordination, advocacy and discussion of downtown issues. The City's commitment to downtown, the reauthorized Business Improvement District funding, and the coordinating vision of the Downtown Durango Partnership has combined to move downtown Durango into a bright, yet historical, future as hoped for by City founders over 125 years ago. |
